Help! I've Lost My Provisional Licence — What Do I Do?

Nothing strikes fear into the heart quite like realising you've lost something really important. If you're a learner driver, that shiny green card known as the provisional licence is as important as it gets! So, what do you do if it seems to have vanished into thin air?

Before embarking on a level 10 panic, take a few steps to confirm that it’s genuinely lost. Ransack your room for its last known location, retrace your steps, and maybe consider subjecting your flatmates or family members to a little interrogation.

If no one cracks and it still doesn’t appear, it’s probably time to admit defeat. This isn’t the end, though. It just means there are some forms to fill out. Tiresome? Yes. Tricky? Thankfully, no!

What's the Situation?

First, you need to figure out which version of 'lost' applies to your provisional licence. Are we talking 'it was definitely somewhere in my room, but now I can't find it', or 'I had it when I ordered that third double vodka last night'? The latter could mean your provisional has been stolen.

If this is the case, you must contact the police to inform them of the situation before taking any further action. Identity theft is serious business—it can turn a simple case of a lost provisional licence into a bigger nightmare, so make sure you alert the authorities as soon as possible.

Once that’s sorted (or if you’ve confirmed it's just lost), you’ll need to apply for a replacement licence.

Apply Online

The process for those in Northern Ireland differs—NIdirect provides specific guidance on how to proceed.

If you’re reading this preemptively, just in case you lose your licence in the future, do yourself a favour: take a picture of your provisional licence now. If anything happens, you’ll at least have a record of all the important details!

If it’s too late for that, don’t worry! This type of thing happens all the time, which is why there’s already a process in place. To apply for a replacement licence, the DVLA offers three options: online, by phone, or by post.

Online

The quickest and most efficient way to replace your lost provisional licence is by applying online. Head over to the DVLA website and complete a replacement licence form. This also applies if your licence is damaged or destroyed.

Keep in mind, you’ll need several important details to complete the form, starting with your Government Gateway ID. You should already have one of these if you applied for your original provisional licence online. Don’t worry if you’ve forgotten your ID or password—there should be an option to reset them.

Once logged in, you'll need to:

  • Provide your driving licence number, passport number, national insurance number, and the addresses of every place you've lived in the last 3 years (if known).
  • Pay the £20 fee. The DVLA accepts most major credit and debit cards, including MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro, and Delta.

Once you apply online, your new licence should arrive within about a week. If you have any issues with the form, you can contact the DVLA by email or phone.

By Phone

If you’re not great with computers or prefer to speak with someone directly, you can apply for a replacement licence by phone. Just call the DVLA on 0300 790 6801.

However, you can only apply by phone if none of your details have changed from those on your original licence. You also cannot apply by phone if your licence is damaged or due to expire in less than 56 days (or 90 days if related to medical reasons).

By Post

Finally, if you don’t mind waiting a little longer and prefer a more traditional approach, you can visit your local post office. You should be able to find a D1 'Application for a driving licence' form. Bring a pen and your personal details, and you're ready to go! If your local post office doesn’t have any forms, you can order one from the DVLA.

However, this option isn’t great if you’re in a hurry, as it can take up to 3 weeks for your new licence to arrive.

Say Cheese!

You might be wondering what the DVLA will do about getting a new photo for your shiny new licence. Once they’ve received your application, they’ll check to see if a suitable electronic photo is already available. In most cases, they can use your passport photo.

If you don’t have a passport or there’s another issue with your photo, you’ll be sent a form asking you to provide a new one. Maybe you were hoping that a lost provisional licence could be a chance to update your photo? Well, good news! You can update your photo through the photo driving licence renewal service. Every cloud has a silver lining!

Lost Provisional Licence FAQs

What do you do if you lose your provisional licence?

It happens to the best of us. If you lose your provisional licence, you can order a replacement from the DVLA. The quickest way to replace it is online. Just head to the DVLA website and fill out the form. Your new provisional licence should arrive within a week, and it costs £20. You can also apply by phone or post. Call 0300 790 6801 or visit your local Post Office.

How do you replace a lost provisional licence?

You can replace your provisional licence online, by phone, or by post. The best route is applying online—it’s easy, cheap, and your licence will arrive within a week. If you can’t apply online, you can call 0300 790 6801, or visit your local Post Office to collect a D1 form. Complete it, post it, and your new provisional licence will arrive in around 3 weeks.

How long does a replacement provisional licence take to arrive?

The time it takes for your provisional licence to arrive depends on how you order it. If you apply online, it should arrive within a week. If you opt to apply by phone, you’ll get it just as quickly. If you apply by post, you should expect it to take around 3 weeks.

Can I still do my driving test if I’ve lost my provisional?

Unfortunately, you can’t take your driving test without your provisional licence. Make sure to keep it safe ahead of your test. If you lose your provisional and your test is more than a week away, order a replacement online, and it should arrive in time. If you lose it less than a week before your test, or on the day of the test, you’ll need to reschedule and may need to pay for a new test.

What if my theory/practical test is booked before my replacement licence arrives? Can I still take the test?

To take both the theory and practical tests, you need to present your provisional licence. If you show up without it, you’ll be turned away and lose the money you paid for that test slot. As this is your fault, you won’t be able to claim for a cancelled test.

Be smart—if you know your replacement licence might not arrive in time for your test, reschedule it as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary charges.

Can I continue with my driving lessons while I wait for a replacement provisional to arrive?

It depends on your instructor. Most driving schools (including Leo Driving School) require students to bring their provisional licences to their first lesson at least. If you're partway through your driving course, you may be allowed to continue with lessons while waiting for your replacement licence. However, you won’t be able to sit either of the tests without it.

How will I know if my request for a new licence has been received?

Once your replacement licence application is submitted, you should receive a confirmation email from the DVLA. If you don’t hear anything after a few days, contact the DVLA.

What should I do if I find my old licence after I’ve already requested a replacement?

If you find your old licence after applying for a replacement, return it to the DVLA with an explanation. Send it to: DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AB.

As you can see, losing your provisional licence isn’t the end of the world. Once your replacement arrives, be sure to keep it safe!
